Getting it right

winter-church-smallsizeA W Tozer wrote, What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us…. For this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at any given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like…. Were we able to extract from any man a complete answer to the question, “What comes into your mind when you think about God?” we might predict with certainty the spiritual future of that man. Without doubt, the mightiest thought the mind can entertain is the thought of God, and the weightiest word in any language is its word for God.

– The Knowledge of the Holy

We must think rightly about God, because what we believe necessarily impacts what we do. What we do is premised on what we believe. Thus the closer our thoughts are to the reality of who God is and what he is like, the more our lives will be a reflection of him. Tozer says that any error in doctrine or any failure to properly apply the theology of the Bible to our lives can be traced to wrong thoughts about God. Read the Bible and study the history of the church and you will soon see just how right he is—how our thoughts of God shape our service for him. When we think wrong thoughts about God we soon serve him in wrong ways as well. We must get our theology right!
